SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

(PART 2)

1 Corinthians 14

1. Communicate with understanding.

For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying. …For if you praise God only in the spirit, how can those who don’t understand you praise God along with you? How can they join you in giving thanks when they don’t understand what you are saying? You will be giving thanks very nicely, no doubt, but it doesn’t help the other people present. 1 Cor. 14:14,16,17 (NLT)

Only mature and well-exercised intelligence can save you from falling into gullibility. 1 Cor. 14:20 (Mes)

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Rom. 12:2

2. Seek the Son of God instead of signs.

So you see that speaking in tongues is a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for the benefit of believers, not unbelievers. Even so, if unbelievers or people who don’t understand these things come into your meeting and hear everyone talking in an unknown language, they will think you are crazy. But if all of you are prophesying, and unbelievers or people who don’t understand these things come into your meeting, they will be convicted of sin, …and they will fall down on their knees and worship God, declaring, “God is really here among you.” 1 Cor. 14:22-25 (NLT)

  • Tongues were a sign to the unbelieving Jews at this particular time in the beginning of the church, when Gentiles could also be blessed with salvation by going directly to Christ for personal salvation, no longer needing to come to the Jewish temple and become Jewish in order to reach the Lord God. And now Christ would also work through the Gentiles to bless others with the good news of salvation.

3. Keep the gift of tongues private.

If no one is present who can interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak in tongues to God privately. 1 Cor. 14:28 (NLT)

4. Follow God’s guidelines.

Everything that is done must be useful to all and build them up in the Lord. 1 Cor. 14:26 (NLT)

For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the other churches. 1 Cor. 14:33 (NLT)

Be sure that everything is done properly and in order. 1 Cor. 14:40 (NLT)
