Finding Your True Self

November 13, 2016

Nothing good lives in the part of me that is earthly and sinful. I want to do the things that are good, but I do not do them. I do not do the good things I want to do, but I do the bad things I do not want to do. So if I do the things I do not want to do, then I am not the one doing them. It is sin living in me that does those things.

Romans 7:18-20 (NCV)

    1.      Choose your influence

Now we do not live following our sinful selves, but we live following the Spirit. Those who live following their sinful selves think only about things that their sinful selves want. But those who live following the Spirit are thinking about the things the Spirit wants them to do. If people's thinking is controlled by the sinful self, there is death. But if their thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace.

Romans 8:4b-6 (NCV)

2.     Treat your "false self" as a dummy

When Christ died, he died to defeat the power of sin one time-enough for all time. He now has a new life, and his new life is with God. In the same way, you should see your selves as being dead to the power of sin and alive with God through Christ Jesus. So, do not let sin control your life here on earth so that you do what your sinful self wants to do.

Romans 6:10-12 (NCV)

3.    Do what's true of the true you

You belong to the power which you choose to obey, whether you choose sin, whose reward is death, or God, obedience to whom means the reward of rigtheousness.

...Now that you are employed by God, you owe no duty to sin, and you reap the fruit of being made righteous, while at the end of the road there is life for everyone.

Romans 6:16, 22 (Ph)

Do what God's teaching says; when you only listen and do nothing, you are fooling yourselves.

James 1:22 (NCV)
