Living a Post-Christian Society

August 17, 2014

1 Corinthians 10:1-11

John 10:10 James 1:17

The things that happened to those people are examples. They were written down to teach us, because we live in a time when all these things of the past have reached their goal. 1 Cor. 10:11 (NCV)

God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 1 Cor. 10:5

So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. 2 Cor. 5:9-10

  • Live to please God in order to live under His direction rather than His discipline.

1 Cor. 9:27

1. Learn something new from God’s Word.

For I do not want you to be ignorant… 1 Cor. 10:1a

2. Live under God’s direction.

… our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 1 Cor. 10:1b

3. Be baptized into Christ.

They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 1 Cor. 10:2

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Gal. 3:27

4. Make God’s Word a steady diet.

They all ate the same spiritual food; 1 Cor. 10:3

Matt. 4:4

5. Be refreshed with the presence of Christ.

… they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 1 Cor. 10:4

“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” But this He spoke of the Spirit, John 7:38-39

1. Think about self-gratification.

These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, 1 Cor. 10:6 (NLT)

2. Idolize something or someone.

Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.” 1 Cor. 10:7

3. Be sexually active outside the bounds of marriage.

We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 1 Cor. 10:8

4. Stretch God’s grace without limits.

We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 1 Cor. 10:9

5. Grumble about God’s ways and will.

And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel. 1 Cor. 10:10
