 THE REALITY OF THE SPIRITUAL

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE CHURCH

Now I want to give you some further information in some spiritual matters. 1 Cor. 12:1 (Ph)

“When the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power. You will be my witnesses—in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world.” Acts 1:8 (NCV)

HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT “POWER UP” THE CHURCH?

The Holy Spirit:

1. Initiates

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body. 1 Cor. 12:13

2. Energizes

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Gal. 5:22-23

Each one is given his gift by the Spirit that he may use it for the common good. 1 Cor. 12:7 (Ph)

3. Perpetuates growth

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF:

-        Receiving the Holy Spirit?

-        Being filled with the Holy Spirit?

-        The baptism of the Holy Spirit?

1. I “receive the Holy Spirit” when I receive Christ.

“If you believe in me, come and drink! For the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within.” When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. John 7:38-39 (NLT)

2. I’m “filled with the Holy Spirit” when I

surrender to His leadership.

Do not be drunk with wine, which will ruin you, but be

filled with the Spirit. Eph. 5:18 (NCV)

  • With the “indwelling” of the Holy Spirit, I have all of the Holy Spirit; with the “filling” of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit has all of me.

  • The marks of a “Spirit-filled Christian” are not unusual emotional experiences, miracles, and speaking in tongues, but rather the character of Christ.

3. The “baptism of the Holy Spirit” occurs when

I receive Christ.

  • The indwelling of Spirit is the baptism of Spirit.

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body. 1 Cor. 12:13

We are all one body, we have the same Spirit, and we have all been called to the same glorious future. There is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, Eph. 4:4-5 (NLT)

Eph. 5:18

Gal. 5:22-23

4. I’m “empowered by the Holy Spirit” when

I let Him be in control.
