1 Corinthians 12:7-11

  • In order for my spiritual gifts to be expressed usefully I must be in the process of maturing.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. 1 Cor. 12:7-11

  • These gifts express the work God does through a believer’s life in a given situation to demonstrate His supernatural power.

  • Word of Wisdom
  • Word of Knowledge
  • Faith
  • Gifts of Healing
  • Working of Miracles
  • Prophecy
  • Discerning of Spirits
  • Different Kinds of Tongues
  • Interpretation of Tongues

Four purposes of tongues in the New Testament

1. To proclaim salvation through Christ to the Jews from every nation in their own language.

2. To confirm to the Jewish Christians that God had granted salvation to the Gentiles too.

3. To convey God’s truth to the Early Church before the New Testament was written.

4. To edify the “inner spirit” of some believers.

1. Accept Jesus into my life.

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments. 1 Cor. 2:14-15

2. Lead my thinking to the desires of the Holy Spirit.

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.  The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Rom 8:5-6

Be wise, and direct your mind in the way of the Lord. Prov. 23:19 (Amp)

3. Crucify the old self.

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfishfeelings and the evil things they wanted to do.  We get our new life from the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit. Gal. 5:24-25 (NCV)
